Fracking And Chemical Exposure Attorneys

You may have heard in the news that there is no irrefutable proof of contamination as a result of fracking. While there may be no clear evidence today that fracking creates problems with ground water, the chemicals used in fracking are deadly while they are on the surface. An accident, spill, leak or explosion during the fracking process puts workers and members of the community at risk of exposure. At Bailey, Javins & Carter, L.C., our attorneys represent workers in the oil and gas industry, their families and members of the community who have been injured as a result of fracking and chemical exposure. We have decades of experience helping clients secure the compensation they need to cover medical expenses and lost wages.

What Is Fracking?

In recent years, hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” has become a popular method of extracting natural gas from the Marcellus Shale formation, which rests right below West Virginia, Pennsylvania and the surrounding states. Fracking involves cutting through rock with pressurized fluids. These fluids include water, sand and a wide range of chemicals.

Does Fracking Contaminate Groundwater?

Millions of gallons of fracking fluid are used for each well. Less than half of the fluids used in fracking are recovered and recycled. The rest of the fluid remains in the well and may eventually leach hazardous chemicals into underground aquifers and groundwater. Studies are being conducted to determine the long-term health effects of the chemicals used in fracking on the nearby communities, homes and families. While many studies remain inconclusive, the types of chemicals used in fracking point to dangers down the road.

Risks to Workers as a Result of Fracking

In addition to the hazards in the community, workers at the drill are also at serious risk of chemical exposure. OSHA recently released a hazard alert for workers in the fracking industry. Exposure to respirable crystalline silica, found in the sand used in fracturing, could lead to silicosis or lung disease.

Additionally, drillers, roughnecks and other workers on the drill site can suffer serious injuries as a result of explosions, blowouts and chemical spills. Chemical exposure can lead to a wide range of injuries, from cancer to brain damage. If you or a loved one was exposed on the job, we can help you through the workers’ compensation process.

We work on a contingency basis. We don’t get paid unless you do.
